Big Dig Seed Event at Martineau Gardens

Ready, steady …grow!

Gardeners and would-be gardeners are being invited to kick-start their gardening year with fun green-fingered gardening activities at the Big Dig Seed Event at Martineau Gardens on Saturday 16 March, from 1pm to 4pm.

Mottled Blue Dwarf Iris

The Community Garden in Edgbaston, Birmingham  is hosting the event to encourage people to grow their own food, no matter how big or small their grow space is.

In collaboration with Local Food Global Food, the event will include workshops and family-friendly activities to inspire even the most reluctant gardeners to don their gardening gloves. There will also be seed sowing workshops, in containers (1.30pm) – ideal for people with just a balcony or small patch to grow on, and a ‘sowing in the open ground’, workshop (2.30pm).

There will be displays and advice on how to grow exotic crops like chillis, chickpeas and coriander plus a curry or soup inspired by this produce for you to try.

And there’ll be a seed swap – bring seeds to swap.

Children can have a go at making wild flowers ‘seed bombs’ and take them down to the woods to scatter (2pm – 3pm) and make seed bombs to take home. Seed bombs are balls made from compost, clay and wildflowers.

Caroline Hutton, Director of Martineau Gardens, explains why the charity is hosting the event: “We want to inspire people to make a move towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Growing your own food is a step in the right direction. It’s great fun, low cost and you get to eat delicious food.”

The Seed Event takes place on Sat 16 March, from 1pm – 4pm, free entry at Martineau Gardens, 27 Priory Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B5 7UG.

Organised in collaboration with Local Food Global Food.  Entry. Tea and cake available.
