A series of events from around the globe have been announced for two of the city’s leading venues.
The ICC and Symphony Hall
A brand new programme of music featuring live jazz, folk, world and roots artists from across the globe is now on sale at Symphony Hall and Birmingham Town Hall.
Music fans can enjoy a wide variety of performances spanning Americana, avant-funk, chanson, Cornish sea-shanties, Galician piping, Irish folk, Japanese taiko drumming, Qawwali and many other styles and genres from internationally established musicians at a variety of Birmingham venues.
A stellar Transatlantic Sessions cast that counts Mary Chapin Carpenter and Eric Bibb amongst its number will visit Symphony Hall (Thursday 7 February), as will legendary guitarist and folk-rock veteran Richard Thompson (Thursday 21 February) and Scottish roots-rock singer-songwriter Amy MacDonald (Friday 1 March).
Highlights include culture clashes and fusions, like the B-Boys-meet-Morris-dancers spectacle of The Lock In at Town Hall (Friday 1 March), and a diverse offering from the Jazzlines programme, such as gigs from Troyka and The Golden Age Of Steam at the Hare and Hounds (Wednesday 30 January), Walter Smith III at the CBSO Centre (Saturday 2 February) plus a performance from acclaimed pianists Brad Mehldau and Kevin Hays at Town Hall (Thursday 21 February) amongst others.
Also now monthly at the University of Birmingham’s Bramall Music Building (5pm Thursday 10 January, 7 February, 7 March), Jazzlines Free Gigs (formerly Rush Hour Blues) continue to take place every Friday evening in Symphony Hall Café Bar from 5pm.
Popular free monthly jazz session Sax In The City, featuring The Notebenders, also makes a welcome return to Symphony Hall Café Bar (1.30pm Saturday 26 January, 23 February, 30 March, 27 April, 25 May, 29 June), celebrating the musical legacy of founder Andy Hamilton MBE with a new monthly residency.
The open family friendly space is also the venue for monthly free events Mid-day Mantra (1pm Saturday 19 January, 16 February, 23 March, 20 April) presented in partnership with sampad, Folk For Free (5.30pm Thursday 24 January, 28 February, 28 March, 11 April) presented in association with Moseley Folk, Musical Picnic (10.30am Saturday 12 January, 9 February, 16 March, 13 April) presented in association with Mubu Music and Beyond Classical (5.30pm Thursday 31 January, 21 February, 7pm 5 March, 18 April) presented in association with Birmingham Conservatoire – all showcasing exciting emerging artists from Birmingham and beyond.
