Student acts ready to go Live

Students from the University of Wolverhampton will be sharing the bill with some of the UK’s top music acts this weekend.

Live 2012Free Radio Live 2012, which is sponsored by the University, will feature headline acts such as Leona Lewis, JLS, Scouting for Girls, Labrinth, McFly, Stooshe, Little Mix, Lawson and Amelia Lily.

And alongside the star names will be nine student acts from the University of Wolverhampton who will be showcasing their talent for the 15,000 crowd at the LG Arena in Birmingham tonight, Saturday 15 December.

They are made up of bands, rappers, a drummer and a stilt walker with the majority of students hailing from the University’s School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure in Walsall.

They all had to come through an X-Factor style audition process to be chosen to perform at the concert.

Sophie Hubble, 19, is studying Dance at the University’s Walsall campus and will be stilt walking at Live.

She said: “I’ve only been stilt walking since May and I’ve done a few events and festivals. but this is by far the biggest I will have performed at. I suppose it’s because it’s a bit different and eye-catching but I’m really excited about being part of it.”

Also performing is five piece melodic pop-rock band, The Concept. The Popular Music and Music students have already performed at Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds official after-show party at The Ballroom in Birmingham and will return to the same venue for The Vaccines after show party later this year.

Lead singer and Popular Music student Dino Franchi, 19, from Nottingham, said: “It’s a great opportunity for us and really good to know the University is behind us.

“It’s the biggest venue and crowd we will have played in front of and all the guys in the band are really looking forward to it.

“I’d say that one of our influences are Scouting for Girls, so to be performing at the same concert as them is pretty impressive.

“Being on the Popular Music course we do a lot of song writing so that really helps when we’re putting tracks together and ideally that’s what I’d like to do as a career when I graduate.”

Other student acts performing are:

  • Illume- Band
  • Black Dynamite-Band
  • Jujhar Singh – Dohl Drummer
  • BeeNiice- Rapper/Vocal Artist
