Back on the road again

Terry Wills talks about the Albion’s resurgent form.

West Bromwich Albion HawthornsSo here it is, Merry Christmas, everybody’s having fun, look to the future now, it’s only just begun.

If I’d been told that Albion would be setting out for Old Trafford on the back of six points clawed from games against Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers, I’d have been more than happy- as would the vast majority of Baggies fans.

Nothing brilliant to make the heart beat faster, and the pulse race. No feeling that we could take on the best the Greed League can offer and beat them. But enough to subsequently pick up six points against a in-form Norwich side and a QPR team desperately striving to climb away from what (based on current form) appears to be a forlorn chase to avoid a return to Championship football.

First the win over the Canaries when Steve Clarke gambled on utilising his substitutes, swapping to a 4-2-4 formation, and as a reward shared the fans’ joyous mood as a cracking header from Lukaku pocketed the three points.

On to the prolonged, slow, tortuous trip to Loftus Road and Harry Redknapp’s blue and white hooped shirted team of grossly overpaid players. His words not mine, although like all supporters I definitely agree.

But even so it was still a game that required endeavour, battling sprit, and desire if the return back to the heart of Gods Country would be smoother than the ride down. In the end another 2-1 victory, and  the Baggies back in the top six. Okay, probably a far from vintage display BUT that attribute to winning game sadly doesn’t count anymore. All that matters is the result, and how it’s gained is immaterial.

I’d love to think that Steve Clarke could win a battle of wits against Sir Alex’s Red Devils but obviously United have to be favourites to continue their current title-chasing dream. Injuries to Olsson, Popov, Reid, and Mulumbu are a worry, but Steve Clarke merely says “We have a strong squad” True enough but, hoping I’m proved wrong, not strong enough to glean a result from the stadium where supporters are forced to sit with their knees tucked under chins due to the shortage of space between the rows. It’s no wonder they can attract and cram 75,000-plus crowds into Old Trafford.

Come on you Baggies.
