A Birmingham  charity has received an extra boost for its work saving the lives of women around the world.

Donate a fiver to Ammalife and the Reed Foundation will chip in and match it for three days this week.

The 1-for-1 cash drive takes place this Thursday (6th Dec) , Friday (7th Dec) and Saturday (8th Dec).

All the money will go towards helping maternal health in places as diverse as Pakistan and Malawi. The donation scheme is part of  the web-based  Big Give Christmas Challenge.

More information and access to the site to give- and double your donation- can be found here at The Big Give.

Teams from Ammalife work at Birmingham Women’s Hospital. Charity treasurer Maria Gee said: ‘The Big Give Christmas Challenge is a fantastic opportunity.’

‘As well as offering our supporters the chance to increase the value of their donation  – sheer brilliance at this time of year when there are so many calls on our cash – it’s a great chance for Ammalife to spread the word about our life saving work.’

‘Donate as little as £5 online on Thursday, Friday or Saturday this week and it turns into £10 when the Reed Foundation matches it.’

‘It’s no exaggeration to say that the price of a coffee and a mince pie can save a life.’

Ammalife’s goal is to prevent maternal deaths. Facts show that 8 out of 10 of the women who die during pregnancy and childbirth could be saved.

Ms Gee added: ‘What started with a small group of midwives and doctors here in Birmingham is now turning into a force for change. It’s not rocket science. We’re not looking for the cure for cancer.’

‘We just need to make sure that women can reach the right care from the right people when they need it most. And a fiver this week starts that ball rolling.‘
