Young bookworms are helping to add a new chapter to their school’s fundraising activities by taking part in a massive readathon.

Students in Year 7 and 8 at Aldridge School are reading as many books as they can to raise thousands of pounds for good causes.

Money from the sponsored readathon will go to CLIC Sargent and The Roald Dahl Foundation.

Over the past five years the school, in Tynings Lane, has raised more than £10,000 for both charities, by encouraging children to take part in its annual readathon.

Mrs Harbans Kaur, the school’s librarian, who helps organise the reading marathon, said the children were reading classics by authors including Michael Morpurgo, Anthony Horowitz and Roald Dhal.

She said: “They are being sponsored to as many books as they can over the next few weeks. We will hold a special assembly in the New Year to celebrate the children who read the most and the money they all raised.”

Peter Walker, aged, 11, said: “It is a good way to read books and help raise money for charity.”
