This Week at the Robin

Lined up for the Pride of Bilston are…

Tonight there’s the latest heat in the Robin/M2 Studios live band of the year competition. This one features The State of Things, an indie band from Wolves, Devil Red and Audio Disease, both from Dudley and Cannock rockers Lightfire. Tickets £3.

Tuesday sees the return of perennial Robin favourites Focus, featuring legendary vocalist Thijs van Leer. Best known for the big hits Sylvia and Hocus Pocus, they’ve been delivering top quality jazz/prog rock for more than forty years and are still recording and touring. Support is from eighties progsters Solstice. Tickets £15

There’s a new arrival in town on Wednesday in the shape of the Billy Walton band from the USA. Guitarist Billy hails from New Jersey and can claim fellow-Jerseymen Southside Johnny and Bruce Springsteen amongst his admirers. After cutting his teeth as a sideman he’s put together a rocking blues band in the great tradition of Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan and they’re currently touring to promote their latest album Crank It Up. Support comes from WT Feaster & his band. Tickets £10

On Thursday there’s a double bill of tribute acts with Livewire (AC/DC) and the ZZ Tops. Tickets £17.50

On Friday there’s a celebration of the music of Rory Gallagher with Gerry McAvoy’s Band of Friends. Bassist Gerry was with Rory for twenty years while others in the band also played with the man himself as he gained his reputation as one of the greatest blues rockers this side of the Atlantic has produced. Tickets £15

Another first time at the Robin takes place on Saturday with ska favourites the Duallers, currently recording their third original studio album to follow on from their chart hits of a few years ago and with an enviable reputation for a storming live show that has become a firm favourite on the festival circuit. Tickets £10

Sunday sees a chance to see the Strawbs in one of their rare electric shows. Another band with much more to them than the hits they’re best remembered for, their brand of folk rock led to massive success in the States and they still tour regularly acoustically to appreciative audiences. Support is Birmingham’s criminally under-rated Red Shoes. Tickets £15
