Apple Day event at Martineau Gardens

Despite the wet summer which has affected Britain’s fruit crops, Martineau Gardens is organising a free, appletastic Apple Day event to celebrate this year’s apple harvest, with Local Food Global Food.

AppleThe event will take place on Saturday 13 October, 11am – 3pm at Martineau Gardens, the community garden in Edgbaston.

Visitors will be able to have a go at making their own juice drinks with two different techniques. They will be able to press apples to make apple juice in the old-fashioned way using a traditional hand-powered, wooden apple press. Or, the more energetic will be able hop on the the Smoothie Juice Bike and use pedal power to run a specially converted bike to produce fruity drinks.

There’s plenty of extra fun at this family friendly event. Children will be able to work in the pottery studio, alongside the Pottery tutor to make all kinds of apple-themed creations. Science Go Round will be running ‘Apple Magic’ – a series of special, fun workshops throughout the day in which children can have a go at experimenting with household ingredients to see what effect they have on apples.

The two and a half acre Gardens, though only two miles from Birmingham city centre, are a green oasis with plenty to explore including woodland, glass houses, a formal garden with trees and shrubs from around the world, an orchard, vegetable beds, a wildflower meadow and a play area. Gardeners will enjoy the opportunity to stock up on the Gardens’ plants and compost.

Caroline Hutton, Director of Martineau Gardens said: “Birmingham is  a city which has high levels of obesity amongst its residents, one of our missions at Martineau Gardens is to inspire Birmingham people to become healthy eaters and grow food: it’s good for wellbeing and this event is a fun way to promote this.”

Martineau Gardens are open Monday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm and are free entry.  The Gardens are at 27 Priory Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B5 7UG. Located five minutes from the MAC and opposite the Priory Hospital. Information at www.martineau-gardens.org.uk or by calling 0121 440 7430.
