Arts Council funds Flip

FLIP 2012FLIP Festival and Light House Media Centre have been successfully awarded Grants for the Arts funding by Arts Council England and UK Lottery to deliver a series of unique events which will place Wolverhampton residents at the heart of animation activity.

The festival will take place from Thursday 1– Saturday 3 November across multiple city centre locations.

Events at this year’s FLIP festival will include; mass participation in gif making culminating in a temporary street art projection onto a landmark building within the city centre, a collaborative project between; web developers, animators and artists, as well as experimental animation films and free-to-attend exhibitions of 2D artwork on display in vacant shops across the city.

FLIP also welcomes Aardman, the creators of Wallace and Gromit, back to deliver another world renowned model making workshop open to young people and families which will take place in Wulfrun Shopping centre. FLIP is also working closely with Wolverhampton Art Gallery and various schools to develop a forum for animation made by young people to be showcased during the festival.

There has been staunch support from the region’s students and FLIP welcomes more than 150 independent animation submissions from around the world each year, which are showcased on Light House’s big screen with a world famous animation line-up which in previous years has included; Aardman, Cosgrove Hall and Bill Plympton.

Renata Walton, Festival Director, said: “It’s the students’ relentless excitement and enthusiasm that maintains our desire to create an amazing festival year on year, and this year we hope everybody in Wolverhampton will get involved”.

Wolverhampton’s independently animated festival, simply known as FLIP, was conceived in 2004 under a Light House project for creatives called PLOT when it identified the need to support the region’s burgeoning animation industry by providing a forum for showcase and discussion focusing on this diverse and colourful aspect of the creative industries.

FLIP Festival will run from Thursday 1st – Saturday 3rd November.
