Attacked pensioner dies in hospital

Emma Winnall, the elderly lady found badly beaten in the bed of her Moseley.

home earlier this month, has passed away in hospital. The 93-year-old, who suffered a fractured skull and broken arm in the attack had been in intensive care since the incident but died at 4.25am this morning as a result of complications arising from her injuries. A post mortem examination will take place today to determine the precise cause of her death.

Head of Major Crime at West Midlands Police, Superintendent Richard Baker said: “This is desperately sad news and our condolences go out to Emma’s family and friends.

“Clearly, this has now become a murder inquiry. But given the extent of Emma’s injuries, combined with her age and vulnerability, this investigation has always been treated with the same level of seriousness as a murder investigation.”

Two people already arrested in connection with the incident, a 56-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man from Hall Green, are due to answer bail at a date in July and police are still appealing for anyone who may have further information about the attack to come forward.

Detailed forensic analysis is continuing on items removed from Mrs Winnall’s Pensby Close home, whilst a Crimestoppers reward of £5,000 is now available to anyone who provides information which leads to a conviction.

Widow Mrs Winnall was attacked in her bed overnight between Monday 30th April and Tuesday 1st May.

Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands Police on the new 101 number or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
