Coventry students’ photo exhibition

Final year students from Coventry University’s popular BA Photography course will be exhibiting their work over the coming weeks as part of the School of Art and Design Degree Show 2011.

The group of nine students – who will be the first to graduate from the course – have created a special exhibition of their images, entitled Photo Synthesis, which will be available to view for free in the School of Art and Design’s Lanchester Gallery from Wednesday 25th May.

Photo Synthesis, whose title refers to the students’ unified presentation of their work, celebrates passion and originality in photography, and aims to reflect the commitment and enthusiasm of the group to their practice as well as a variety of styles and genres.

Among the students displaying their images is Marta Kochanek, from Poland, who recently completed an internship in New York with world-famous photographer Annie Leibovitz. Her collection, Queer’ists, explores ideas of gender, identity and art through analogue and digital photography.

Also exhibiting in Photo Synthesis is student Harpreet Khara, whose collection W _ N D E R – L U S T : Hidden Love marks the culmination of five years of work featuring photography from several continents paired up with postcards from around the world, from Tokyo to Vatican City and back to Coventry.

As well as exhibiting in their own gallery, students of the course have also enjoyed success on the international scene over the past year, with selected work shortlisted for and reaching the final of prestigious contests such as the Luceo Student Project Awards, the Saatchi Gallery National Art Competition and the Worldwide Photography Gala Awards.

Paul Smith, course director for BA Photography at Coventry University, said, “There has never been a more challenging and exciting time to embrace the photographic medium, and this is reflected in the work that these graduates have produced. Their images offer a fresh approach to this traditional medium, and I’m confident that this group of talented individuals is leaving the course with the knowledge, skills and ability to succeed in their chosen field.”

The University’s BA Photography course, which places a strong emphasis on new technologies and enterprise, has recently won worldwide acclaim for its unique approach to promoting itself and its students through social media.

Earlier this year it became the first university course in the world to offer an app through which anyone can take part in its degree classes free of charge.
