This Christmas, Birmingham’s first and only registered organic butcher is throwing a charity hog roast outside his shop.
Steve Rossiter, of Rossiters Butchers on Bournville’s Mary Vale Road has teamed up with one of his farmers Adrian Bell, who’s coming over from Hillview farm in Staffordshire with a pig and a hog roasting oven, to feed the hungry hordes outside the shop.
Steve’s throwing in the pig, and Adrian’s coming out of his own goodwill, all to raise a bit of cash for Acorn’s Children’s Hospice.
In an economic climate where people are less inclined to give money to charity, Steve and Adrian have decided to lead the way in showing good old fashioned seasonal goodwill.
If you’ve ever been to Rossiters for meat in the week running up to Christmas, you’ll know there’s always a queue out the door, with Paul Leverton from the deli opposite often running across the road with hot teas and coffees for the crowds. Steve often takes over 600 orders over each Christmas and New Year period, and the 23rd December is normally the busiest day for order collections. Steve says “Acorn’s Children’s Hospice is a well deserved charity and it’s great to be able to give something back over the Christmas period, particularly for children.”
Steve Rossiter has also teamed up with Copas Traditional Turkeys, Marie Curie Cancer Care, and Help the Hospices, to distribute top quality free range turkeys to Primrose Hospice just in time for their festive celebrations.
Rossiters butchers has been serving the Bournville community since 1983 and has been registered organic with the Soil Association since 1999, and was featured as one of Rick Steins local food heroes. Rossiters is one of a growing number of grassroots food businesses in South Birmingham doing their bit to bring good quality food to the community, alongside Leverton and Halls Deli and Coffee House, and Loaf Cookery School, who Steve collaborates with on running innovative butchery master classes.
So if you’re ordering meat from Rossiters this Christmas, come and pick up on the 23rd December, have a hot pork roll, and give generously to Acorns! You can pre-order your meat by popping into the shop at 247 Mary Vale Road, Bournville, or by calling 0121 458 1598.
